Sex and the Single Girl
SATC was a groundbreaking show not merely for its open depiction of sex but, more precisely, for its specific focus on female sexuality. Throughout its six seasons, SATC offers a variety of messages concerning the new role of women in the sexual realm. From issues of personal pleasure and self-care to questions of self-definition through sex, SATC displays its affinity with third-wave feminismâs ideas in its stress on womenâs sexual freedom above everything else. As Maglin and Perry point out, for third wavers, â[s]exuality, in all its guises, has become a kind of lightning rod for this generationâs hopes and discontents (and democratic vision) in the same way that civil rights and Vietnam galvanized (a previous) generation in the 1960sâ (xvi). In keeping with the spirit of the third wave, one of SATCâs main concerns is the assertion of womenâs sexual autonomy, and the debunking of the traditional view of female sexuality as subordinated to menâs. This issue constitutes the implicit foundation of the show and it is also explicitly dealt with numerous times throughout the series. An example of this is the pilot episode, which wonders whether modern women are able to have sex like men, that is, without any kind of sentimental attachment. The fact that this topic is addressed in the very first episode points to its importance throughout the series.
The pilot episode introduces the characters, and the very first time we see the girls together they are having a conversation that will be representative of the general tone of the show and its main preoccupations. Samantha puts it this way:
If youâre a successful single woman in this city, you have two choices: you can bang your head against the wall and try and find a relationship . . . or you can say âscrew it,â and just go out and have sex like a man. . . . This is the first time in the history of Manhattan that women have had as much money and power as men plus the equal luxury of treating men like sex objects.
